Development Origins
According to some uncertain sources, the Puli dog might trace its lineage back to ancient Tibetan dogs. Known also as the Puli sheepdog, this breed has been a crucial part of Hungarian shepherding for over a millennium. When the Magyars migrated to Hungary, they brought along various sheepdogs. The larger breeds resembled Komondors and Kuvasz dogs, while the smaller ones were akin to Pulik. Aside from their color differences, Pulik bear a strong resemblance to Tibetan Terriers, suggesting a significant genetic link between them. Renowned for their quick reflexes, obedience, and water-resistant coats, Pulik (referred to as “leader dogs” by Hungarian Magyars) are likely ancestors of modern poodles.The Puli dog traces its origins back to the 10th century and is considered one of the finest Hungarian sheepdogs. Believed to be descended from ancient sheepdogs, this breed boasts a history spanning over a millennium. Traditionally utilized as a herding dog in Hungary, its exceptional obedience eventually led to its use in police work. The Magyars hold this breed in high regard, often seen leaping onto the backs of sheep during their return at dusk. The Puli is known for its high energy levels, alertness, and activity. Its most distinguishing features include a thick, fluffy coat and a lively gait with unique movements, enabling it to perform demanding tasks like herding on the vast Hungarian plains. Both agility and robust health are crucial for fulfilling these age-old duties.
Morphological Features and Identification
The upper fur is long and forms cords, whereas the undercoat is soft and dense like wool. Coat colors include pure black, rust, and gray. The skin beneath the fur has a distinctive blue-gray hue specific to this breed. For a dog to be considered purebred, its nose, eyes, and lips must also be black.
This breed has a square build with medium size and V-shaped ears. Its limbs have strong bones, and its tail curls over its back. It is energetic, robust, alert, active, and well-balanced.
When running with long strides, it moves forward steadily and efficiently. Its steps are free in extension and propulsion. As it speeds up, its feet naturally align towards the center line of movement. Its footsteps are silent, making it ideal for tough herding tasks on grasslands. These intelligent dogs often leap onto the backs of sheep when returning home at dusk.

The Puli is a purebred dog known for its intelligence and rationality. Naturally affectionate and smart, it is very family-oriented and gets along well with other pets. The Puli is especially loyal to its owner, making it an excellent watchdog. It is recommended to purchase a Puli as a puppy because of its deep emotional capacity; if rehomed after the age of three, it may suffer from homesickness and refuse to eat or drink due to missing its former owner.
