The origin of Akita dog

The breed originated from the Chinese Rural Dog, which was brought to Japan. The Japanese then developed it into a distinct breed by establishing specific breeding standards.

Originating in the 17th century in Japan, this breed’s ancestors were known as Akita hunting dogs (秋田アキタ), which were mountain hunting dogs bred by exiled Japanese nobility in Akita Prefecture on Honshu Island. These dogs accompanied their owners while hunting large game such as bears. The Akita Inu is highly valued in its native land and was officially recognized as a national treasure of Japan in 1931.

In its homeland of Akita Prefecture, Japan, this breed is one of six dog breeds with significant historical and cultural importance. The Akita Inu has an excellent temperament, extraordinary courage, and is very gentle. In northern Japan’s mountainous regions, the Akita Inu serves as an adept working dog.

The Akita Inu is one of Japan’s most iconic dog breeds. Initially used for hunting, it was later refined into a larger breed. Its name comes from its birthplace in Akita Prefecture. Today, it has become a cherished family pet. In the 17th century, Lord Satake of Akita trained these dogs for dog fighting to motivate samurais, gradually increasing their size into larger breeds. During the early Showa period in the 20th century, dog fighting was gradually banned in Japan, leading to a decline in their numbers until conservation efforts led to their recognition as a national symbol.

Due to their loyalty to owners and families, calm demeanor with family members, and alertness towards strangers or unfamiliar objects, Akita Inus have remained highly popular in Japan as one of the most beloved dog breeds.
