Development Origin

The ancient herding dog and large guard dog known as the Bouvier des Flandres originates from the region of Flanders, spanning from the Dutch coast to northern France. These dogs have thick, shaggy coats that make them well-suited for tough working conditions. The breed standard was officially established in 1912, which led to more systematic breeding practices. Unfortunately, many of these dogs were lost during World War I, making them rare afterward.

In the 1970s, the Bouvier des Flandres made its way to Germany where it quickly became popular. This breed is known for being healthy, energetic, and intelligent with a quick learning ability. However, their strong personality and confidence mean they need consistent and dedicated training to become truly obedient companions.

Bouviers are excellent guards and protectors who do not attack without reason. They tend to be naturally wary of strangers and are not recommended for inexperienced or overly indulgent owners. These dogs require regular work and exercise as well as routine grooming to maintain their shaggy coats; simple styling is also an option.
